"The Kitchen God watches over the household throughout the year. Many families place a picture of the Kitchen God next to their stove as the kitchen is often the focal point of family activities and conversations. During Lunar New Year, the Kitchen God would go to heaven and tell the Jade Emperor all the good and bad things families did. Families gave sweet sticky rice to the Kitchen God to keep him happy and so that he couldn't open his mouth to say bad things."

We asked visitors of the Children's Museum for the Arts to sketch out dishes that would please the Kitchen God and then invited them to use a variety of craft materials to create a final version of their plate.
